Recognize non-email folders

Some of the email folders on IMAP server (typically, just off the root) contain non-email objects.

Examples: Calendar, Contacts, Sync Issues.

How would you suggest that we recognize those non-email folders?
Is there some API or extension we could use?

I don't think there is a way to recognize those in other way than by name.

There is no such IMAP protocol feature - XLIST and SPECIAL USE have
pre-defined set of folder purposes (such as All mail, Spam, Sent mail) and Calandar nor Contacts is not among them.
